During this period, people settle back into the routine of a new school year. They adjust by waking up early again. They remember the new class schedules and start getting to know their teachers. But for recent graduates, life after graduation can feel very different.

For another group, the graduates who finished a few months ago see the adjustments differently. They realize they are no longer starting a new school year but are in the real world. The moment they have worked toward for many years has arrived, and emotions follow.

5 Tips for Life After Graduation

  1. Life has no written path- Up until now, most of life was outlined for you. You spent years following assigned tasks, milestones, and expectations. That era is over; your peers may change careers or start families. Choose what works for you, be patient, and proceed at a pace that feels right.
  2. Be okay with making mistakes. Chances are you will not meet someone who feels they have done everything right in life. Most people have a story or two to share about a time when things did not turn out the way they thought.  But the good news is that you can always change your mind and start over.  If you come to the realization that you are unhappy with your career choice, change it! If you decide to move to another state and realize it was not what you thought, move back!  You are not a failure; you are learning what works for your life.
  3. Honor your feelings- It is completely okay to feel anxious, depressed, sad, or lost during this phase. The unknown brings so much discomfort.  Be okay sharing your feelings with peers, friends, or a therapist.  Maybe ask them to share some of their stories.  Sometimes you don’t need someone to fix things for you.  You just need someone to validate you.
  4. You DO NOT have to have anything figured out- Contrary to what you may think, you do not have to have things figured out right now. As a matter of fact, most of life is a continuous path of trying to figure things out.  Of course, that is not to say you should not try to have some ideas or plans going, but you do not have to reach a specific finish line to feel accomplished.  You have time; there is no need to rush.
  5. Don’t forget about the positives- Even though there may be a lot of discomfort during this phase, there is also a lot to be proud of. Enjoy the little moments, celebrate small wins, and find accomplishments to celebrate.

Life after graduation is a big transition, so give yourself time to adjust. If this season feels overwhelming, these signs you need therapy can help you decide whether extra support might help.
