My approach to therapy varies and is dependent upon whatever each client’s needs are. Personally, I utilize a variety of therapies throughout sessions, but the most commonly used would probably be CBT, DBT, and IFS. I also like to incorporate somatic exercises (body connection) because I am a believer of holistic healing and connecting mind to physical body.
However, some people don’t vibe with these practices, and that’s perfectly okay. Everyone’s therapy experience is different; some clients prefer casual talk therapy, and others are interested in more structured processing sessions with psychoeducation and homework; some clients take time and multiple sessions to open up, and others are ready to share their story upon the first meeting. The spectrum of therapeutic approaches is vast, and I like to allow clients the opportunity and safe space to explore what makes them most comfortable. I believe in allowing clients to set their own pace, and I’ll meet them wherever they feel is best for them.
For the most part, I would say yes! Personally, I enjoy somatic breathing, exercise, nature/animal therapy, distraction activities and creative outlets. However, clinicians are people too, and I think it’s perfectly normal to slack on the self-care every once in a while. Do I meditate as much as I should? Probably not, but I do enjoy it and recommend it to almost all of my clients!
Unfortunately I am not, but I am able to recommend and assist clients with finding psychiatric providers in the area.
